about

Having characters throughout my history that have been caught-up in a constant unfulfillable desire to acquire more, I’ve long wanted to write a song about it. It’s an addiction that’s exploited and even encouraged (in the name of “helping the economy”), instead of viewed as detrimental and it’s the only one I can think of where we have another word for addicts: “consumers”.

Putting this in a song isn’t a new concept, but I think it’s important to add voices to the fire until it catches everyone who needs to hear it; and to serve as a reminder that nothing has value beyond the value we assign to it. Something gold can be revered by one person, but appear dull to someone else. Something gray might be bland to some, but beautiful to others. The notion that nothing has meaning may sound bleak, but I think it’s very freeing. Once you make that realization, it’s up to you to decide what brings meaning in your life; not some tailored array of algorithms.

lyrics

Nothing’s really yours
but still we search for more
what holes are you trying to fill
with the life you’re trying to build
Nothing’s really yours
but still we reach for more
what holes are we trying to fill
with the life we’re trying to build
How do I throw away all my preconceived notions
When I know the real wealth is our emotion

Bright and shiny things
sap our souls away
can we learn to embrace
the beauty of gray?
All these shiny things
Seem Dull today
Can we learn to embrace the beauty of gray
Can we learn
Can we learn
